So I downloaded a .flv capture thing from cnet, and it installed a weird toolbar on all my browsers, I took it all off but it would not go away, so I tried to do system restore, but my computer froze while shutting down, and after half an hour, I did a force shutdown by holding down the power button but it seems to have utterly WRECKED my computer beyond repair and system restore won't work anymore. So while it will turn on, and I can force it to return to whenever it last knew that it had a brain, it doesn't connect to the internet at all, and no help solutions are actually helping so I'm doing a massive backup and I'm going to hit it with reinstallation cds and see if that fixes things. After that... I am out of ideas, and will have to take it to someone to be fixed, slash possibly buy a new computer with like, the last of my savings. At which point, I don't even know. There are no jobs in this town except for shit I can't do like be a mechanic or a ship welder or a registered nurse.
Re: finding work to boost the cash flow. I don't know if it's something which would work for you, but have you looked at doing freelance web design for people searching online?
I have not. I mean, I've done websites for family and friends and a local political campaign, some for barter and some for money. I guess I made an assumption that most people would want someone from an established business or with a degree in the field. Is that not the case?
It depends on the person/business, really. I mean, yes, people putting out ads looking for PHP and iOS developers are probably going to want work done by someone with a degree... but even then, I'd hardly guarantee it.
My last job was at a place which sold advertising to small-to-medium sized businesses -- mom & pop joints, mid-sized law firms, etc. Very, very few of those places had their sites designed by a preexisting ad agency, or someone who'd come out of college with a degree in web design. After all, keep in mind that it's a hugely over-saturated market, so a degree is not necessarily a big deal.
To be fair, if you're working for small businesses, you will not make a lot of money. There will be the chance that they won't want to pay, which means being firm and no-nonsense about fees and payment schedules. That said, it's a good food in the door to larger things, and it's a relatively quick way to build up cashflow. Craigslist might be helpful, of course, but there's also things like Reddit's forhire subreddit... though I imagine that would be for work a bit more serious than the plumber or pizza joint, y'know?
Thank you. ♥ My mom just said "See, that's not so bad, you can just share mine and Dad's until Black Friday sales!" Like... I want to think that this would be no big deal, two months sharing two computers. I could probably do it. But as a petulant child who spends too much time with her computer, I dunwanna. >.>
I love you for offering but I think I'm going to suck it up and get something new. *sigh* That computer was a little over three years old (and purchased refurbished); I was just hoping it would make it to three and a half so I could ask for half a computer for Christmas. :-\
